HOUSTON (AP) — Conner Weigman threw for 236 yards and four touchdowns as Houston overcame an early 14-point deficit to defeat LSU 38-35 in the Texas Bowl on Saturday night. The Cougars (10-3) rallied to secure the win in front of a home crowd, just six miles from their campus at NRG Stadium, the home of the NFL's Houston Texans.
Weigman, named Bowl MVP, completed 27 of 36 passes and added 56 rushing yards. His touchdown passes included two to Amare Thomas (8 and 4 yards) and one each to Tanner Koziol (7 yards) and Traville Frederick Jr. (2 yards), helping Houston erase a 14-0 hole and take a 21-14 lead into halftime.
"I was locked in," Weigman said. "It meant a lot to me. It meant a lot to the team."
LSU (7-6), playing in their final game under interim coach Frank Wilson III before Lane Kiffin takes over in 2024, opened the game with a 99-yard kickoff return touchdown from Barion Brown and a 23-yard TD pass from Michael Van Buren Jr. to Trey'Dez Green. However, the Tigers couldn't hold on as Houston dominated the second half.
Ethan Sanchez gave Houston the lead for good with a 25-yard field goal at 7:42 of the fourth quarter. Dean Connors sealed the win with a 20-yard touchdown run, and despite a late 3-yard TD from LSU's Zavion Thomas, Houston recovered the onside kick to secure the victory.
"This is a big accomplishment for our program," said Houston coach Willie Fritz. "To get 10 wins in the Big 12, and to do it against an SEC team in the bowl game, it’s a testament to our players’ hard work."
For LSU, the loss capped a disappointing season after a 4-0 start, ending with a 2-3 record under Wilson, who led the Tigers following the midseason firing of Brian Kelly. LSU will begin the Lane Kiffin era with a high-profile matchup against Clemson on September 5, 2024. Houston, ranked No. 21 in the CFP standings, will host Oregon State on the same day next year.
